Water Outlet
Definition
A swim machine water outlet is the purpose-built fitting on a pool wall that discharges water from a counter-current swim jet as a controlled, forward-facing stream, giving swimmers resistance without needing a long pool.
How It Works: Creating the Current
Unlike a standard return jet, which sends filtered water back into the pool to support circulation, a swim machine outlet is engineered to deliver a much larger, directional flow. A wide opening and flow-straightening grille, sometimes a honeycomb-style laminar flow grill, align the water and reduce swirl at the outlet.
The aim is a broad, even current rather than several narrow jets that strike the body unevenly. Flow quality depends on the impeller or pump, outlet geometry, installation depth and pool dimensions. "Laminar" often describes a smooth, consistent current rather than guaranteeing perfectly laminar water flow.
Key Considerations for Australian Backyards
-
Pool type and positioning: In a compact plunge pool, align the outlet to create a usable training lane. In a lap pool, centre it and leave sufficient swimming distance. Set its height to suit a natural swimming posture and keep it clear of steps or ledges.
-
Safety and compliance: Use the specified outlet and intake guards. Check AS 1926.3 and applicable state or territory requirements. A grille alone does not establish compliance for the complete system.
-
Materials: Coastal and salt-chlorinated pools need corrosion-resistant components. Consider 316 marine-grade stainless steel or UV-stable engineered polymers, subject to the manufacturer's specifications.
-
Sizing and compatibility: Match the nozzle and grille to the swim jet's rated flow. An endless pool outlet nozzle or swim spa return fitting may serve a related purpose, but fittings are not necessarily interchangeable.
Maintenance Tip
Switch off and isolate the unit before cleaning the grille. Remove leaves with a soft brush and use only a manufacturer-approved descaler for calcium deposits. If the current weakens, check the filter and follow its manual for backwashing where applicable. Never remove, drill or modify safety guards.
